Ron Perlman at Starfest '94
Denver, Colorado. February 26, 1994

Ron Perlman attended the Starfest convention at Denver, Colorado, on the 26th of February, 1994, as part of his promotion for Cronos.

Ron did a Q&A session on the Saturday afternoon, which was attended by around eight thousand people. He was asked a variety of questions about his many projects, including The Cisco Kid, Quest for Fire, The Name of the Rose, Sleepwalkers, Ice Pirates, and Beauty and the Beast.

When questioned about The Name of the Rose, Ron told the story of his attempt to get the part of Salvatore. How the real-life hunchback who was to play the role died just days before shooting was due to begin, resulting in Ron receiving a last minute phone call to go to Europe immediately.

On the flight over, he read the script, and also the book by Umberto Eco, and realised that the script contained very little language, whereas in the book, Salvatore ranted non-stop in 5 languages. On arrival, he pointed this out to director, Jean-Jacques Annaud, who told him to make something up. So Ron bought the book in 5 different languages, and wrote down a word of Latin, a word of German, a word of French, and so on. Each morning he would show Annaud what he was going to say that day, and the director would say "great." So, basically, Ron made up his own dialogue for the film.
