December 28, 2004. On
salon.com, Stephanie Zacharek put HELLBOY at #8 on her list of the 10
Best Films of 2004.
[8) "Hellboy" -- Like most stories based on comic books,
"Hellboy," in which Ron Perlman plays a hulking, beer-guzzling, butt-kicking,
red-skinned demon with the tenderest of hearts, has a deeply moral underpinning.
But director Guillermo del Toro is less interested in your standard-issue
battle between good and evil than he is in exploring the nooks and crannies
of human vulnerability. Having superpowers doesn't mean you can escape
pain -- in fact, it may mean you're destined to suffer some things more
acutely. "Hellboy" is a superhero movie with soul.

April 26, 2004. From
US magazine, a supplement to the Los Angeles Daily News.
THE BIG-SCREEN SCENE:
Ron Perlman, who stars in Revolution Studios' big-screen comic-book
saga "Hellboy," reports he's set to make his feature-film directorial
debut with a project close to his heart.
"I can't wait. I've
been carrying this project around for a couple of years," he says.
"It's called 'Wooden Lake,' and it's a little story about the destiny
of two brothers who are victimized by a series of events that change
the course of their lives."
Perlman--who honed
his directing chops on his former "Beauty and the Beast" series--says
he's lined up veteran actor Hal Holbrook to play the grandfather of
the two boys but is still looking for actors to play the young brothers.
If all goes as planned,
he'll start shooting "Wooden Lake" in the fall. Will he star in it as
well? "No," he quips, "I would never work for me. Even with
my disorder, I don't have enough personalities to be the director and
the star."
