IESB interview with Ron Perlman
December 15, 2004
While attending the Filmmakers screening of "Flight of the Phoenix," at the Mann Bruin Theatre, Westwood, CA, Ron did a short video interview with Robert Sanchez of IESB.net.
For those who don't have Media Player I have transcribed that interview as closely as I could to the original.
IESB: Last time we talked you said you were going to direct a small film, how's that project coming along?RON: It's going good, I'm after actors right now and I hope to be shooting it in the spring.
IESB: Now, for all your comic book fans out there, they want to know what is going on with Hellboy 2?
RON: Guillermo's writing it, he's in Spain doing another film, and as soon as he's done with that we'll be in pre-production for Hellboy 2.
IESB: And do you know where you're going with the storyline this time round?
RON: They don't trust me to tell me. They figure if they tell me, it will be all over the place.
IESB: How much are you looking forward to putting on all that red makeup, that whole haul of prosthetics once again?
RON: I'm sorry I'm not wearing it right now, actually. (Grinning)
IESB: Besides Hellboy and besides the movie you're hoping to direct, what else are you looking to do?
RON: I just finished a Stephen King movie, and I've got a bunch of things lined up for after the New Year, so it's a good, busy time.
IESB: Where's the wife today?
RON: She's in New York celebrating Christmas, where it snows, hopefully, and where they have big trees, adorned by ice skaters. And I'm going to join her on the weekend.
IESB: So when do you think Hellboy 2 will start production, is there a film date or something where you're going to start?
RON: I would say we'll be in pre-production in January of '06.
IESB: Obviously Hellboy, the first one, was very successful, I think the writers got what they wanted, the directors got what they wanted, you got what you wanted, and the audience loved it, how much bigger is Hellboy 2 going to be?
RON: I'm not sure, I think that they're interested in exploring the folklore, all of the time-travelling that Hellboy does in the comic books, and some of the mysterious kind of occult relations he has with other spirits, and I think if I'm not mistaken it might explore that more. I don't know if it's going to be bigger, but it's going to go deeper into the lore of the character.
IESB: And everyone's pretty much signed on to go for the sequel, right? Selma and everyone else?
RON: As far as I know, yes. We'll see what the script looks like.
IESB: No more sci fi for you? Star Trek or anything? Anyone phone you lately?
RON: I get invited to reunions.
IESB: What's the next reunion?
RON: I don't know. I haven't checked my calendar.
IESB: Okay Ron, thank you very much.
